Foba BALTE Quick-release Plate Manages Tethering Cables (Professional Photographer Magazine Web Exclusives)
Clever little quick-release plate has channels for your cables (for tethered shooting). Takes the stress off the port connection. Kudos!

Very cool article about a very cool photographer using some very old technology instead of all of our fancy digital bells and whistles to get a very specific look.

'Roots in Detroit' Photo Competition Winners Showcased in Farmington - Farmington-Farmington Hills, MI Patch
![]() |
| Me being all artsy fartsy! |
Last night was the Roots in Detroit Contest Photography Exhibit at the Historic Winery building in Farmington, MI. I was fortunate to be picked as the second place winner and Dawn received an honorable mention. I believe there were over 100 entrants.
Lesa Ferencz, the creator and organizer of the event had everyone's winning piece printed and mounted at 24 x 36 inches and displayed in the middle of the room. Each participant got a large chunk of wall to display other work. There was something like 125 people who came through for the one-night-only show. Dawn and I are so pleased and grateful to everyone who came out. Apparently a big storm blew through during the showing. I was pretty much oblivious to it.
Joni from the Farmington Patch was there and interviewed Dawn and myself (I now kind of regret mentioning Batman! -- read the article and see what a dork I am!).

It was an awesome event and we were both honored to be part of it. Thank you Lesa and all the participants and supporters and a special thanks to all our friends and family who came out to see!

So, how cool is this? I just googled myself (something I only remember to do about once a year) and I see that I am listed as one of the references for this article (specifically the page on one of my wedding websites where I answer the burning question, "Why should you hire a professional photographer?").
Outstanding!

New Kindle e-book by Heath Lowrance. A great follow-up to his premiere novel, The Bastard Hand. This is ten (i.e. the title) plus one bonus short stories that really make you think about your place in the universe.
Also, that cool-creepy cover is an original photo by my über-talented wife, Dawn Sketch. Like some tv detectives who always get their man, Dawn always gets the shot, the one best, greatest keeper!

Nice, concise tutoria by Scott Kelby. Long exposures for b/w. Anybody can do this at twilight or after dark, but Scott shows us how to do it in full daylight (shameful, right?). Check it out and learn!

historic Detroit Club
Last fall we had a cool secret project and now we can talk about it! We were commissioned to photograph the historic Detroit Club at Cass and Fort. The club dates back to 1882 and the current building is about ten years newer. Lots of history has taken place here.

gonna stray...
Going to stray from one type of art today, to another.
Heath Lowrance's book, The Bastard Hand, is now available to order!
On Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Bastard-Hand-Heath-Lowrance/dp/0982843623/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1300314363&sr=1-1
And at Barnes and Noble.com : http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The-Bastard-Hand/Heath-Lowrance/e/9780982843628/?itm=1&USRI=heath+lowrance
This is Heath's debut published novel (and, ahem, I designed the cover!) and it is a terrific, pulpy story w/ a bit of a speculative edge.
Synopsis (from B&N site):
Charlie Wesley is not right in the head. He's escaped from a mental hospital up north and hitchhiked his way south, the voice of his dead brother urging him on. But when Charlie hits Memphis, the fine line between his delusions and reality shift in the form of the Reverend Phineas Childe-a preacher bent on booze and women; a Man of God with a dark agenda. Charlie is the perfect pawn in the Reverend's game of retribution. And the small North Mississippi town of Cuba Landing will be the setting for the Reverend's very personal Apocalypse. . . .
Oh, and see the youtube book trailer here (with original music by Nat Pike):

I ordered mine last night. Can't wait to re-read and get the ol' boy to sign it!

book trailer
Just finished working with Heath Lowrance and Nat Pike on this terrific book trailer for Heath's upcoming novel, The Bastard Hand, available March 20 via New Pulp Press. Heath did the voiceover, Nat provided original music in the vein of N. Mississippi Blues, and I've got my hand in the mix a bit, too.
Now get ready to buy the book come March 20th! www.newpulppress.com

book covers
So... I've had a couple recent opportunities to do photography and/or design work for book covers. I'd like to do more of it. Anybody know how one might go about approaching publishers for such a purpose? I know some houses keep someone in-house and I suppose others farm it out freelance. Any info out there?
Here's the one for Heath Lowrance's upcoming novel, The Bastard Hand (New Pulp Press, 2011 -- available March 20th!) :

The other one, I don't think I can post, yet. But I will when the time is both right and ripe.
